Building structures with wood

During the five weeks, we met and worked on three mornings each week. On the first day we worked as one group, then individually, and later in four groups of five students each. On the first day, we used available beams of about 5x10 cm cross-section and 1.2 m length. I only showed a basic unit of four beams, but no other precedents until towards the end.

In phase 1 – principle, I tried to stimulate the students to observe and to prompt them to ask questions which would lead from one form to another using the given beams.
In phase 2 – exploration, I promted further questions pointing to specific issues, relating to the shape of the beams and the dimension of the structures, which were explored in small structures.
In phase 3 – development, each group of students made proposals for three structures as a contribution to the exhibition. These proposals were discussed, developed, refined, tested, and their production was planned.
